The short version: yes, if you want an electric bidet seat — a grounded GFCI outlet within about four feet. No, if a non-electric seat or an attachment will do. For a lot of people the second half is the answer that matters.
If you do want warm water, a heated seat and a dryer, you need power at the toilet, and the details are worth getting right before you buy rather than after the box arrives.

What an electric bidet seat requires
A three-prong grounded outlet, 15 amps minimum, GFCI protected, 120V. That’s the specification across essentially every manufacturer selling into North America. TOTO lists it directly on the Washlet product line; Bio Bidet’s manuals open with the same instruction. It isn’t a brand quirk — it’s what the appliance is designed around.
Three things follow, and each one trips somebody up.
The outlet has to be close
Most bidet seat power cords run about 4 feet. That’s it. If your nearest outlet is by the sink on the far wall, the cord will not reach.
The cord may exit the wrong side
This one is genuinely annoying and it’s buried in spec sheets rather than printed on the box. Most bidet seat cords exit from the right side of the unit as you face the toilet. TOTO Washlets exit from the left. Coway’s Bidetmega uses a 47-inch two-way cord that can be routed either direction, which is the exception rather than the rule.
If you have exactly one outlet and it’s on the opposite side from your seat’s cord, you’ll be stretching a cord across the back of the toilet or the floor. Check the spec sheet diagram before ordering — product photos almost never show the cord.
GFCI: required, or strongly recommended?
Both, depending on your situation. Current electrical code requires GFCI protection for new bathroom outlets, so if you’re having one installed it will be GFCI and an inspector will enforce it.
If you have an older bathroom with a pre-existing non-GFCI outlet, a bidet seat will plug in and work fine. It isn’t a code violation to use what’s already there. Every manufacturer nonetheless recommends upgrading, and given that this is a heated electrical appliance connected to a water line, that recommendation is worth taking. A GFCI receptacle is a $15 to $50 part. Codes vary by jurisdiction — ask a local electrician if you’re unsure.
Power draw and whether you need a dedicated circuit
Two kinds of electric seat, and they behave differently. Tank-style seats hold a small reservoir of pre-heated water and peak at roughly 600 to 800 watts. Tankless seats heat water on demand and peak at roughly 1,400 to 1,500 watts.
Either way, the seat only pulls that during an actual wash cycle — a few minutes a day. The rest of the time it idles at a very low draw, lower still with eco mode on.
In practice, a shared bathroom circuit is usually fine. The exception worth knowing: a tankless seat on an older shared circuit can make the bathroom lights flicker briefly when the heater kicks in. It’s uncommon and harmless, but it surprises people who assume they’ve bought a faulty unit. Bio Bidet recommends a separate circuit specifically to avoid this. If you’re choosing between tank and tankless and your home has older wiring, tank-style is the lower-hassle option.
For new construction, NEC requires a 20-amp circuit with at least a 15-amp outlet.
Extension cords: what each manufacturer actually says
This is where guidance diverges sharply, and it’s worth knowing your brand’s position before you assume.

What every source agrees on, regardless of brand:
- No two-prong cords. No light-duty cords.
- No power strips or adapters that defeat the grounding pin.
- Never convert an extension cord into a makeshift receptacle. This is not code-compliant and it’s the one genuinely dangerous shortcut in this whole topic.
- Keep the cord out of walkways and away from splashes or standing water.
- Test the GFCI with its TEST and RESET buttons before you rely on it.
Kohler’s spec is the strictest published one and it’s a reasonable default even if you own a different brand: 12-gauge, grounded, SJ-type, under 25 feet.
An extension cord is a legitimate stopgap while you decide whether to pay for an outlet. It is not as good as an outlet. It adds a connection point, it’s visible, and in a bathroom used by someone with mobility or balance concerns, a cord running along the floor is a trip hazard that outweighs the money saved.
What it costs to add an outlet

Labor is 70 to 80% of it. The device itself is $15 to $50. What you’re paying for is a licensed electrician’s time, typically $50 to $130 per hour, plus a trip fee of $100 to $200 that applies whether the job takes ten minutes or two hours.
Batch the work. Because of that trip fee, adding one outlet costs nearly as much as adding three. If you have other small electrical jobs pending, do them in the same visit.
Placement. Roughly 12 inches off the floor is the usual recommendation. Put it where the cord can reach without crossing the floor, and on the correct side for your seat’s cord direction. Tell your electrician which seat you’ve bought. Most straightforward installs are finished in well under an hour.
If you can’t have an outlet
Sometimes the answer is no. Rentals, historic buildings, bathrooms where running new wire means opening walls. Here’s what’s left.
Non-electric bidet seats. A full seat replacement, same fitment considerations as an electric one, no power required. You get an adjustable spray with proper positioning and control. What you give up is warm water on most models, plus the heated seat and dryer. Some models offer warm water by tapping your bathroom sink’s hot supply, which is worth knowing if warm water is the feature you actually care about.
Bidet attachments. The cheapest route by a wide margin. They sit between your existing seat and the bowl, need no power and minimal plumbing, and fit a wider range of toilets than full seats do.
Handheld sprayers. Mount to the wall or tank, no electricity and no seat involvement at all. They require more hand control to aim and operate, which makes them a poorer fit if dexterity is a consideration.
